Bio-physiology explanation. Mind and body are connected. Any stimulus (pain messages) (1) are transmitted from the body via axons (2) to the spinal cord. Large or thicker axons carry sharp or acute pain messages while smaller axons carry messages more slowly resulting in transmission of dull or chronic type pain messages. The messages travel simultaneously via two routes to the thalamus and the somatosensory cortex to deliver sensory pain. Meanwhile, the second transmission route delivers the messages to the amygdala, hypothalamus and the cingulated cortex via the emotional network. So pain is processed two ways and results in neural transmission of chemicals (neural peptides) are received by receptors causing the exitory stimulus of neural networks. These results are evident in a reaction function or behavior within the body. For example, this could manifest itself in a withdrawl from pain or a feeling cue as reflected on a person’s face or voice.
