What the experts say!
According to the Institute of Medicine, “over 116 million adults” suffer from chronic pain and “1/3 are seriously disabled by it”. In fact, this is “more than the total affected by heart disease, cancer, and diabetes combined (IOM, 2011). The institute also notes that people are seeking new knowledge and approaches to treatment. Correspondingly, integrative medical approaches are gaining in popularity and people are looking for alternatives to traditional pain management (drug therapy). Chronic pain is here to stay and is costing an estimated “$635 billion per year” (IOM, 2011). The personal toll is more alarming, and a recent review of “non-opioid” treatment options indicates that long-term use of analgesics “can result in opioid misuse, addiction and risk of overdose” (Garland, 2014). Hence, a focus on new multi-component strategies is long overdue.
